Welcome back to my blog! In this post I am doing yet another review (I've finished two books all at once!) and this one is of The White Tower by Cathryn Constable! I assure that if you read this, you will be blown away by the powerful message and looming sadness in this story. The three words on the back describing it are ethereal, dreamy and heart-rending. All three are true. The White Tower is probably the best book I've ever read, after Harry Potter. It's just amazing. But, anyway, enough with the intro!
Summary
Livy Burgess' best friend, Mahalia, has died of leukaemia, a form of cancer in the blood. Swallowed by sadness, sometimes Livy wonders if her life will ever be normal again. But then her dad gets a new job, making her move schools to Temple College, where she struggles to fit in because of her grief.
At night, she is mysteriously drawn to the roof of The White Tower, wishing she could just step off and fly away to see Mahalia again. That was before the boy came along. He appeared on the roof, claiming the Burgesses were just trouble, and that she should leave. But what is going on? With Mr Hopkins, the old librarian at Temple College, appearing a crazed homeless man, giving out books and acting strangely, what really is going on at Temple College, and is it really true that Dr Smythe, the headmistress, is keeping a secret?
Favourites/Least Favourites
My favourite character was Livy, because she seems so brave and fearless to lose a friend. She is like the ideal main character for an adventure/dreamy book.
My least favourite character was Mr Hopkins, but I'm not going to tell you why. It'll be a surprise when you read it...
My favourite part of the story was the end, as everything felt so satisfying as it all fitted together, intertwining with the plot. Like the secret of Temple College, and the dangerous experiment. It all makes sense at the end; a story is like a giant jigsaw, at first it's puzzling, and seems to never go together, but then when you work it out it all fits perfectly, and the plot is all developed and grown-up, in a way. I can;t stress this enough: it's awesome.
