Today I am sharing with you some tips for writing a book, and some goals you should set to keep on track. These tips will help you write your very first novel! Let's get into my top tips and tricks!
1. Plan your story before you start writing.
I have to admit, I don't usually plan, but it really helps when I do. So plan out your story, covering vocabulary, who, what, why, when, where, how. You need to think out your plot.
2. Do a character profile.
List all the characters you are going to use, as then you will have a long list of pre-prepared names. Do a thorough character profile on your main characters, so you know pretty much everything about their appearance and personality.
3. Set goals and deadlines.
This tip comes from actual authors. By setting goals and deadlines, you are encouraged to get to your goal. Maybe give yourself a block of chocolate or something when you reach your goal, as a reward. I aim to do at least 100 words each day, and I think this is a good goal to set. Maybe I should set a reward too.
4. If you don't want to do 100 words each day, do a paragraph a day.
Doing a paragraph a day will get your novel done faster. Or, you could do 2 or 3 paragraphs a day.
5. Make time to write your book.
If you don't have time to write your book, then you might as well just stop. It requires commitment and time.
6. Do not use too many adjectives.
Never use too many adjectives! You will most probably get rejected from a publisher if you are not self-publishing. Do not go overkill on the adjectives. Use them still, but do not use them in every two sentences. And use them effectively too. Don't use them just to pad out the story, use them to enhance the story.
7. Go back and edit your story.
If you have something wrong with your story, and you do not have an editor (which you probably won't have if you are just starting your writing career), then you have to go back and edit. Reading it aloud helps single out more mistakes in your writing.
8. Prepare yourself for critique.
To launch your successful writing career, you have to prepare yourself for critique. You have to accept that some people will like it and some people will not. Learn to use this critique to your advantage.
9. Be positive all the time.
The key thing of writing a book is being positive. This will encourage you to carry on going even when it is hard to.
10. If you don't like a book you are writing, then stop doing it.
If your heart's not in a book, start a new one. If it is the way you have written it, start again. I know it might sound annoying, but it has to be done. If you don't like the book you are writing, then it will lose its spark. The book needs to sound like you loved writing it.
So they were my tips on writing a book. I hope they help you, and I hope to see your novel soon on the market (and hopefully you complete it using these tips)! See you soon on my book blog! 😊📚
